For New York City /.'ers, Linus Torvalds is on WBAI, 99.5 FM, starting right now, midnight, Feb. 9-10. The program lasts 90 minutes, but I don't know how long Linus will be on. Apparently it's a call-in type show. If you're unlucky enough not to live in New York, there's a RA stream of the radio broadcast available at http://www.wbaifree.org/.

    He confessed that he didn't do a damn thing when it came to Linux. He renamed command.com and put it out on the 'net as a joke, and it just sort of snowballed from there. Whoda tunk it? Ya dumb turd, you.
  • Having a helluva time trying to connect... ping shows a good latency without drops, but it just spins on 'connect'...

    Ah well. Hopefully someone'll record it and post an archive.

    Which brings an interesting point. How relevant to our lives is this everyday news. This dude is ranting about Hillary Clinton being accused of supporting drugs. Who cares?

    I've stopped watching TV, and rarely read any other news site but Slashdot. The reason being is that most news is irrelevant. My life is really more affected by RedHat's next purchase than it is by whatever Hillary Clinton's drug policy is. So why pay attention?

    Unfortunately, my apathy makes me less active in politics than I should be. Perhaps we need a slashdot forum where /. readers analyze various candidates and their stand on technical issues.

  • There was a Kevin Mitnick [freekevin.com] interview on this station last night for at least a half hour. Quite well done, really - the show's host didn't take everything Mitnick said at face value and did get Mitnick to mention from time to time that he'd done something wrong. They exposed both sides of the story (and this is a really complex story). I look forward to the Linus set.

    Of course, WABI-Host is now talking in hushed tones about George W. Bush's potassium chloride addiction. *groan*

  • I finally got jacked in, and what I'm hearing doesn't sound at all like it's leading to a Linus interview. The jock is whispering about whether the music played at Hillary Clinton fund-raisers encourages children to masturbate, and whether George W. Bush's favorite drug is cocaine or potassium chloride. He's now playing an old Billy Joel tune. It's at least good to hear that the Pacifica station in NY is as wacky as KPFT here in Houston. Rock on, dudes. I'm hanging in there for Linus.

  • The first time you go to a site that didnt work in linux, (icravetv in my case), the windows version says the same, and then it offers to download updated codecs, after that it works again, I suspect its that extra banner stuff that isnt supported in the linux version.

    Someone said the windows version worked under WINE though, havnt tried myself.

  • Yeah, 2600 uses [2600.com]WBAI [wbai.org]. Honestly, though, why should they have a copy of this program on 2600's site [2600.com]? This isn't their program -- it's apparently called Earthwatch. [I live in New York, so I can listen without RealPlayer. Now to see if anyone has anything interesting to say. Doubt it.] Oh, for the record, Emmanuel Goldstein, publisher of 2600 and host of the radio show, has been working on the DVD fight, not just Mitnick (though he did have a 45-minute interview w/ mitnick this week, so he didn't talk about DVD much).
  • No, it isn't a digital stream, if you're listening from wbaifree.org. It says on the site that it isn't. And, yes, this guy is very strange, even over actual radio waves.
  • Yup, nothing more, nothing less. No new, or rehashed, words from Linux himself. Just a nutty host muttering about drugs, capital punishment, open source, and Billy Joel's "Captain Jack." I was gonna record the show for people not in the area, but, sorry, folks, it ain't worth it.

    That sounds suspiciously like the keynote Linus gave at Linux World Expo last Wednesday. I was under the impression that this was a live interview.

    Linus is a good speaker; he disarms you with his humility, and is quick to point out when he doesn't know something or someone else would be more qualified to answer. However, when hit with a question he feels is appropriate to answer, he can give it to you with both barrels.

    Where did you find that out? It says "5.0 or higher" on the website.

    I just tried to listen in and the G2 Alpha (Linux) claims that there is no renderer for the file type.

  • I've been getting this with a LOT of content lately.... And I dont really know why. I got it with icravetv just before they shut down, but it worked the week before.

    some mobile stuff/transmetta and making linux friendlier to these

    3-d stuff for supposedly CAD, really for games

  • Did anybody make an archive of the interview, for those of us who did not hear about this until far too late? Otherwise, the only way I can hear the interview would involve pissing off Dr. Einstein.
  • Hey, I'm totally the same way. I have nothing to contribute when people are talking about 'current events' because I don't even know what the hell is going on in the world (except when it's tech related).

    It bothers me that I'm even *less* knowledgable than the average American when it comes to this (how sick is that?), but a great site to brush up on your political issues is www.govote.com. I'm not a shill for this place, but it's great cuz it tells you exactly what politicians stand for and can match you to a candidate based on your interests. Straightforward stuff. Really educational if, like me, you're politically inept.
  • I think it's time to convince radio ppl to use stream mp3 instead of realaudio format.

    I've been recording Pacifica radio shows in mp3 (for personal use) since last year. 1 hour long show in 32 bit 44100 hz goes down roughtly 14 MB.

    I heard from radio hosts that realaudio has been sending people to radio stations to help them get online. Anyone familiar with these offereings?

  • For us? Probably nothing new. Linus has been interviewed a lot, and most of us Linux geeks have read most of the interviews. He'll probably be asked the same old questions that he's always asked.

    And of course, he'll shoot back the same witty answers he always does, especially 'world domination'. Oh well. At least Linux is getting some coverage on the radio, bringing it to some people who've never heard of it. Perhaps it'll spark an interest in some. One can only hope.

  • For all of you that hadn't listened, all they did was play Linus' keynote from last weeks Linux Expo, New York. While I liked the keynote, I was pissed for obvious reasons that what I listened to was not exactly a live interview. IMHO michael should get his facts straight next time.

    I am in NYC, I caught the 1 AM to 1:30 AM portion, until the DJs came on schpieling their Radio Jock yammerings. *ugh* No announcement that the scheduled aired portion was ending for the station. Torvald was cutt off in mid-sentence, he was answering questions from the floor. There appered to be a huge audience. This was no radio interview, it was a broadcast of a lecture soemwhere.

    When the over the air radio broadcast was cut off I turned on my gf's Real Player 6.x on her Win95 machine. The station's Web site read RA 5.0 needed at the minimum, we met that. Then the player would not play unless I d/l a 4 MB plug-in. F**k that!

    I hate RA, that dang thing is always REQ that plugings be installed, it came with Netscape 4.5, it's had half a dozen plugins installed over time and it ,ost of the time it won't work unless more and more of them are added. Am I the only one who hates to use Real's player for this reason??

    BTW, LT did touch on the question of which journaling FS will win out: ~let the market decide~ is what he said.
